Nothing can replace hands-on experience. When companies work with prospective employees they have the chance to directly interact with individuals, improve their skills and determine if there is a long-term fit. Interns and apprentices are able to practice skills, learn from mentors and advance their careers.

Internships

The Milwaukee Area College Internship Consortium (MACIC) was established in 2000 to educate employers on internship best practices and encourage the development of internship opportunities in the Milwaukee area. Resources for employers interested in taking on student interns include an employer toolkit: Starting and Maintaining a Quality Internship Program.

MACIC hosts an annual “Celebrate Internships” Employer Appreciation Event.

Youth apprenticeships

Wisconsin’s Youth Apprenticeship program is a part of a statewide School-to-Work initiative. It is designed for high school students who want hands on learning in an occupational area at a worksite along with classroom instruction.

This one or two year elective program combines academic and technical instruction with mentored on-the-job learning.
